MENA Roundup is a weekly publication containing insightful articles on politics in the Middle East, focussing on Syria and Iraq. lars@menaroundup.com

Key developments
  • The United States has suspended its talks with Russia on Syria, accusing Russia of pursuing a military course.
  • Rumors are circulating that the United States might consider limited military strikes against the Assad regime. However, it is unlikely that Obama will dare to undertake such an adventure in his remaining time as President.
  • Pro-regime forces advanced in the north of Aleppo city.
  • The Islamic State claimed a suicide attack in Hama city on Monday. The Islamic State has a presence in the eastern province while rebels, supported by the jihadists of Jund al-Aqsa, continued their advance north of the provincial capital. The rebel’s strategy seems to be stretching the pro-regime forces and therefore exploit the regime’s shortage of manpower.
  • Ahmad Salamah Mabrouk, Al-Qaeda veteran and high-ranking official in Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, was killed by a U.S. drone strike. If you don’t remember him: He was sitting on al-Joulani’s right when the Nusra leader announced his group’s split from Al-Qaeda.
