MENA Roundup is a weekly publication containing insightful articles on politics in the Middle East, focussing on Syria and Iraq.

Key developments
Articles worth reading
  • Pro-regime troops advanced further in eastern Aleppo. They seem to be in control of the heavily contested Old City. Since the ground offensive began, the regime took about 70% of the rebel-held enclave.
  • There is no political progress in sight - and likely not intended. Russia has vetoed another resolution at the Security Council that planned a ceasefire and access of humanitarian aid.
  • Additionally, Syria’s Foreign Ministry indicated that it won’t accept a ceasefire as it could provide rebel forces an opportunity to regroup.
  • Meanwhile, Russia continued its devastating air campaign across the neighboring province of Idlib, using incendiary munitions and killing dozens of civilians. After the fall of Aleppo, Idlib will be the main rebel stronghold and the regime leaves no doubt that it will continue its scorched-earth policy.
  • Another city in the area around Damascus has been evacuated: The truce allowed rebels to head towards Idlib with most of their weapons.
