MENA Roundup is a weekly publication containing insightful articles on politics in the Middle East, focussing on Syria and Iraq.

Key developments

  • The Kurdish YPG advanced in the IS-held town of Tabqa, continuing its push on the 40 km far declared IS capital Raqqa.
  • However, the situation is complicated: Last week, Turkish warplanes attacked YPG positions in northern Syria and PKK positions in Iraq. Dozens died. The United States met the YPG’s outrage with a visit of a US commander who inspected the sites. Additionally, US armored vehicles were deployed along the Syrian-Turkish border in order to protect the YPG from further attacks.
  • The problem that ultimately became visible in the case of Manbij is getting more and more absurd: US troops attended the funeral of killed YPG fighters and protect the affiliate of a group - the PKK - that the US, the European Union and Turkey consider as a terrorist organization.
  • No matter what one thinks about the PKK/PYD/YPG, Washington’s strategy is utterly short-sighted and flouts the security interests of its NATO ally Turkey. Washington’s “success” regarding its fight against the Islamic State is now tied to the conflict between the Turkish state and the PKK. Well done!
  • According to reports, a high number of ISIS foreign fighters has defected in face of the group’s latest setbacks.
  • FSA rebels in southern Syria were able to expand their territory and reached the province of Deir ez-Zor.
  • Infighting has reignited in East Ghouta - could that be the final deathblow for the rebel enclave? Read the piece below.
Curious: The crazy story of an FBI translator with a top-secret security clearance who was working on an investigation against Denis ‘Deso Dogg’ Cuspers, the German rapper who joined the Islamic State, but then secretly travelled to Syria to marry him.
