MENA Roundup is a weekly publication containing insightful articles on politics in the Middle East, focussing on Syria and Iraq.

Key developments
  • Turkey: Mercy Corps, a major non-government aid organization, has been forced to stop its cross-border activities in northern Syria by Turkish authorities. The organization was given no reason for this step. Still waiting for the whole story – if this is part of the government’s strategy to create the impression of an external enemy and conspiracies with regards to the upcoming referendum we have reached a new low.
  • In case that anyone wonders why the PKK still gains support: U.N. investigators documented human rights violations including killings, disappearances and torture and up to 500,000 displaced people due to the Turkish offensive in the southeast.
  • Conventional boots on the ground: A first wave of 400 US Rangers and Marines with heavy artillery has been deployed to the area west of Raqqa in order to support the YPG-led advance on the Islamic State’s de facto capital.
  • Reuters says that the “peace diplomacy has suffered a setback” when rebel groups declared their boycott of the ongoing talks in Astana. I am curious about the underlying definition of “peace diplomacy”.
  • More than 2,000 Iran-led fighters have been killed in Syria since the conflict began.
  • Forced displacements continue in Homs: rebels and their families will leave the neighborhood of Al-Waer in the coming weeks. Destination: Idlib or the pro-Turkish rebel pocket in northern Syria.
  • Pro-Assad forces continued their advance on Qaboun, Tishreen and Barzeh. The area has strategic importance regarding the control of East Ghouta.
