MENA Roundup is a weekly publication containing insightful articles on politics in the Middle East, focussing on Syria and Iraq.

Key developments
  • The diplomatic process is dead - or as Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader and a key ally of President Assad, puts it: “There are no prospects for political solutions… The final word is for the battlefield”
  • Since the ceasefire officially collapsed last week, pro-government airstrikes killed more than 400 people in Aleppo. Footage indicates the use of incendiary bombs.
  • Pro-regime forces reportedly advanced in Aleppo city. Nothing durable confirmed yet.
  • Rebels advanced in Hama province, capturing the strategically important village of Ma'an.
  • The Red Cross said that 71 aid trucks reached the besieged towns of Madaya, Zabadani, Fou'a and Kefraya. While the first two are opposition-held, Fou'a and Kefraya are regime enclaves in northwestern Idlib. The deal was that the aid reaches all four towns simultaneously.

and last but not least:

  • Surprisingly, the UN Security Council’s emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss the new escalation in Aleppo ended without any results because of disagreements between some leading powers.
Sidenote: Jürgen Todenhöfer meets Nusra commander?
Todenhöfer Interview
Jürgen Todenhoefer, a German activist/journalist, published a video of himself interviewing a “Nusra commander” who chats about U.S. and Israeli support for the jihadists. Have a look at the footage: The guards at the beginning don’t have beards and wear Syrian Arab Army uniforms. The commander is wearing a golden ring. Online activists geolocated them at territory under regime control. Plus: A mid-level Nusra commander who gives an interview about the cooperation of his group with the U.S. and Israel? Highly unlikely.
Is this real? I look forward to Todenhoefer’s response to all those inconsistencies. Until then, you can find some information about Todenhoefer’s activities here and my summary (German read) on carta.
